The life as we knew it series5/19/2023 Miranda and her family manage to grab food from the nearby grocery store before it is looted, but it isn’t nearly enough to keep them alive for the indeterminate future. Cities on the coasts have been destroyed, entire electrical grids have been shut down, and the crops have all been washed away. The change in the moon’s gravitational field instantly causes changes in the Earth’s tides, creating earthquakes and tsunamis that the world has never seen before. Miranda lives a normal teenage life with perfectly average problems, but when an asteroid crashes into the moon and sends it spiraling out of control towards the earth, her life is forever changed. I’ve never felt such strong emotions while reading a book, and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants a totally immersive reading experience. The author did an incredibly good job of weaving her story, so much that I was disgusted at the mere thought of eating after reading about characters dying from starvation. When I finished this book and looked up out of the window of my classroom, I was astonished to see my world and not the one from the book.

The flight portfolio book review5/19/2023 why should it matter that Orringer’s vertiginous unscrollings of event and intent, unfolding in the south of France in the very pit of Vichy brutality, are chiefly her own? But it does matter. The mind of the Varian Fry of The Flight Portfolio is Orringer’s mind, and how, in the war between history and imagination, can we deny her that?. In scene after scene, Varian’s leg slides seductively (and also schematically) along Grant’s or vice versa. Even the glamour of the homoerotic, which fuels Orringer’s engine of suspense, turns threadbare through overexposure. Yet Orringer makes it a part of his character, expanding on speculations by Fry’s biographer, Andy Marino. For the historical Fry, beyond hunches and hints, there is no evidence of homosexuality. Orringer revivifies with cinematic verisimilitude. Her Marseille breathes as a city breathes. Her landscapes regularly rise to a Keatsian sensuousness. Orringer’s scrupulous research into this turbulent period goes far beyond bookishness. if the young Varian Fry once resembled a type of dramatically evolving character in fiction, he has now become, in Julie Orringer’s sympathetic and prodigiously ambitious novel, a fictional character himself.

In the context of his passionate engagement with questions of aesthetics, the scope of Benjamin’s media theory can be fully appreciated. The volume contains some of Benjamin’s best-known work alongside fascinating, little-known essays―some appearing for the first time in English. The collection tracks Benjamin’s observations on the media as they are revealed in essays on the production and reception of art on film, radio, and photography and on the modern transformations of literature and painting. This book contains the second, and most daring, of the four versions of the “Work of Art” essay―the one that addresses the utopian developments of the modern media. Long before Marshall McLuhan, Benjamin saw that the way a bullet rips into its victim is exactly the way a movie or pop song lodges in the soul. This essay, however, is only the beginning of a vast collection of writings that the editors have assembled to demonstrate what was revolutionary about Benjamin’s explorations on media. In this essay the visual arts of the machine age morph into literature and theory and then back again to images, gestures, and thought. Benjamin’s famous “Work of Art” essay sets out his boldest thoughts―on media and on culture in general―in their most realized form, while retaining an edge that gets under the skin of everyone who reads it.
